When water is coming through the ceiling, the clock matters. There is also an insurance angle. Most homeowner policies contain a duty to protect the property from further damage after a loss. If you leave a hole open for two weeks and the interior is destroyed, a carrier can decline the portion of the damage that resulted from the delay. Tarping is not just practical, it protects your claim.
A proper tarp is not a blue sheet weighted down with bricks. We install tarping that is fastened and sealed so it stays on through the next system, covering the affected area with enough overlap to shed water rather than channel it into a seam.
Before we cover anything, we photograph the damage thoroughly. This matters if there is a claim, because once the tarp is on, your adjuster cannot see what was underneath it. One of our customers described exactly this sequence after a storm took off a section of shingles: tarp service first, photographs taken so he could file, then the full replacement.
Tarping is a temporary measure. It buys days to weeks, not months, and it buys enough time for an adjuster appointment and a scheduled repair.
Once the property is protected, we move into the normal process. A full inspection to find the extent of the damage rather than only the visible part. Photo documentation. If a storm caused it, help filing the claim and meeting your adjuster. Then the permanent repair or replacement.

Move what you can out from under the leak and get containers under active drips. Pull furniture and rugs clear.
If water is pooling in a bulging ceiling, put a bucket underneath and pierce the low point of the bulge with a screwdriver to release it in a controlled way. A ceiling holding a pocket of water will come down eventually, and it does far more damage falling on its own.
Photograph everything before you clean it up. Turn off electricity to any circuit near active water intrusion.
And stay off the roof. A wet or storm damaged roof is genuinely dangerous, and people are injured every year in Tennessee trying to tarp their own roof in the rain.
